Patient 1 – Angelo – CASE FILE

Day 2 – Bloodwork and Background (12/10 or 12/11)
Information from day 2 can be found here
Genetic questions for you to answer can be found here (due Monday 12/14)

So far, our diagnosis board looks like this:

PROPIONIC ACIDEMIA
(http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/propionic-acidemia )

This condition fits the symptoms because:

  • It is an inherited disorder
  • It leads to a buildup of acids in the blood
  • Symptoms start in the first days of birth, and include poor feeding, vomiting, appetite loss, lethargy, and weak muscle tone.

In order to look for Propionic Acidemia, we will perform these tests:

  • Perform a DNA test for the mutation that causes it.
  • Perform a urinalysis to look for amino acids/organic acids

MAPLE SYRUP URINE DISEASE (MSUD)

This condition fits the symptoms because:

  • It is an inherited disorder
  • It leads to an abnormally high level of leucine in the blood (and other plasma amino acids)
  • It leads to ketosis (buildup of ketones in urine)
  • Symptoms start in first days of brith and include avoiding food, coma, feeding difficulties, lethargy, seizures, urine smelling like syrup
  • The family are Mennonnites

In order to test for Maple Syrup Urine

  • Perform a urinalysis for amino acids in urine
  • Perform a DNA test for the mutation that causes it

Math 1: Week of 12/7

Lesson Description:

On Monday, for our warmup we did Factor Trees, I personally thought they were extremely fun. For our classwork we either worked on Multiples and/or Divisibility. We had no cool down. Our homework was also to work on either Multiples or Divisibility on Alcumus. It is due 12/8.

On Tuesday we had a preview of our homework assignment. Classwork was to finish the divisibility test on google docs. On cooldown we worked on our homework. Our homework is Problem Set 3.2 (Divisibility Tests). It is due 12/10.

Frosh Sci: Week of 12/7

Lesson Description:

On Monday, we read over An Introduction to Diagnostics for Warm Up. The part we read included pathogens that invade the body, inherited genetic conditions, the loss of normal regulatory control mechanisms, degenerative changes, trauma, toxins, environmental hazards, and nutritional factors. Once again for Classwork we did more role research. We did not have cool down. Our role research is due Tuesday 12/8

On Tuesday, our warmup was telling someone next to us about out specialty, we proceeded to take down three things that we would ask them. Next for classwork we reviewed a case about Patient 1, Angelo, his symptoms are becoming lethargic, having trouble eating, and having rigid limbs. His seizures have stopped and he is in stable condition. He is 7 days old and 2 years ago his brother died at 9 days old because of inability to thrive. Other info will be added next class. For our cool down we created a case file in a google drive document. Our homework is to answer questions on this document. For more info on Angelo go here.

[On Thursday, our warmup was to decide whether Angelo’s disorder was cause by genetics, dysregulation, pathogens, nutrition, degeneration, or environment. We suspect that it is genetic, but also are looking into  dysregulation and nutrition as causes. For classwork, we looked at the results of our tests and developed a possible diagnosis. For our cool down we did brag sheets. Our homework is to answer the genetics questions on this document. ]

Math 1: Week of 11/30

Lesson Description:

On Monday, we did a warmup where we reviewed order of operations. We then proceeded to go over the basic rules of multiples and the definitions, we also went over them on a number line which stretched across the classroom.  During cool down we got the opportunity to organize out binders which was much needed. For homework that day, if we hadn’t completed our worksheet during class.

On Tuesday, we made a list of factor pairs on a worksheet that Sylvia handed out. We proceeded to classwork where we made a list of multiple patterns and hung them on the walls. For homework we must complete the multiple exploration assignment. It is due on Thursday 12/3.

On Wednesday, we reviewed our integer multiplication. For classwork we did Divisibility Rules. We also worked on problems 1.2.3-3.2.4. Lastly we did Brag sheet, remember, they are used for Sylvia to measure how you’re doing by taking your views of how you did into account so be truthful in how good you were. Our homework is to do Divisibility and Multiples on Alcumus. It is due on Tuesday 12/8.

Your role research mission:

  1. Create a google document
  2. Paste in the role and guiding questions (from here Assigned Roles & Questions )
  3. Find a good source and paste in the link
  4. Copy information from that source related to the questions
  5. Repeat step 3/4 with new sources until your information is complete.
  6. Organize and edit your information to make it make sense

Below, I am including some links to help guide your research & get you started! I will continue adding to this list…please email me with any links you find that you think are useful!

Frosh Sci: Week of 11/30

Lesson Description:

On Monday, we started our new unit (Micro Organisms). We were assigned parts in our groups, Find your assigned topic here. Our warm up was to brainstorm as many diseases as possible. We were extremely successful in my opinion. For classwork we assigned roles (see above). For cool down we were explained that this is our class blog where our work will be posted and explained. Our homework was to research our roles and it was due Tuesday.

On Tuesday, we continued our unit on Micro Organisms. Our warm up was to read a sheet on body systems and write a short summary on one of them. Our classwork was to fill out a sheet on Google Docs about Homeostasis and Feedback Background. For our cool down we worked on our specialty research from our assigned topic. Our homework for this day was to complete our specialty research. It is due on Monday 12/7

On Thursday, we watched a video about homeostasis for our warmup. Beware of it, its a bit… strange, to say the least. For our classwork we did some more work on our role research. During cool down we did our brag sheets again, remember, they are used for Sylvia to measure how you’re doing by taking your views of how you did into account so be truthful in how good you were. Our homework is to finish our role research. It is due Monday 12/7.
